Why choose Bonsmara Beef?

With the import of eight heifers from Texas in 2015, Charlotte and Roy were the first to introduce the innovative Bonsmara breed to California.

The Bonsmara breed is originally from South Africa, and is adapted especially for dry and hot conditions, like those of Northern California, where C & R Ranch is located. That means our herd sustains itself quite well without stressing or straining the natural resources in our area.

Even now, there are only two ranches in California where you can find this specialty beef!

Planting native trees and grasses is part of building a sustainable ranch. Raising a herd that thrives despite high temps and dry skies is the other piece of the puzzle.

Bonsmara cattle are perfectly adapted to the production of grass-fed/grass-finished beef.

The cattle eat only the grass and natural forages grown on C&R Ranch.

Charlotte and Roy’s decision to promote the Bonsmara breed reflects their commitment to producing healthy food through regenerative, sustainable practices.

Reebz, our Ranch Manager, had this to say about Bonsmara

One of my favorite fun facts I learned about Bonsmara when I met them is that their hide is slightly thicker than other breeds. This makes it harder for ticks and mosquitos to penetrate through the skin to the bloodstream.

Therefore the Bonsmara are resistant to local diseases that could be spread through ticks and mosquitos. This blew my mind and makes me so excited to raise and promote this breed in our western landscape.

By choosing Bonsmara beef from C&R Ranch, you are choosing sustainability, health and a delicious meal.
